SYLVIA KIRANTA SUYIANKA : PERE Farmer/Business lady

As a maasia lady ,born and raised on the slopes of kajiado county, I grew up watching and admiring my
mum raise us in the maasai culture, where she sold milk and beads that helped raise my young siblings
and I. a trait that I carried passionately.

I am a business entrepreneur, a certified value addition expert in milk and milk handling. A founder and
CEO of Nara treats (social enterprise) a sub company of wilsam dairies products. We do value addition to
milk, and milk products that is (Yoghurt, milkshake, and mala, we are looking into introducing Cheese,
butter and ghee).

Kajiado County is a pastoralist county known for livestock rearing beef and milk production being the
major source of income, trade and livelihood to the Maasai community. Women particularly depend on
the sale of the milk from their farms to meet their expenses and needs. As wilsam dairies our major
intention is and will always be to serve as a link between the farmers and end users, we buy their milk in
wholesales, pasteurize, add value and sell to the end users, local shops and other distribution outlets.
From above trade, the women are able to get money, resources to cater for their other basic needs. The
Maasi women have formed groups that our company supports. In this group they make, beaded
bracelets, necklaces, belts, earrings and attires that supplements their milk farming income, we as a
company supports them by;

  • Providing a market base for their products
  • Link between their buyers
  • Aid in sourcing of the unavailable resources for their handiwork
  • Packaging and distribution of their products

Challenges Faced

Our main challenge currently is the lack of enough equipment and machineries such as the cooling tank
and packaging units, having this would enable us in the faster and smoother as well us being able to
take more milk from the Maasai ladies. Our mission and vision is to get a milk plant in our local area for
easy access and storage of the raw milk.
